Crag 2 Mountain are providers of Mountain Training's Hill Skills & Mountain Skills, NNAS Bronze, Silver and Gold and YNSA. They also provide their own progressive navigation courses; Basic, Intermediate, Night Navigation and Bespoke Courses

 

Crag 2 Mountain offer a structure of courses to develop your navigation skills from beginner to a confident navigator, from having never looked at a map right through to having the confidence to take other people out on remote walks. All courses teach skills that enable you to navigate in any visibility.

Like every course with Crag 2 Mountain, the navigation courses are not only designed to improve your skills and environmental knowledge, but they will also develop your confidence to enable you to thrive on your own adventures. You will go away feeling inspired to create your own memories exploring the outdoors.

Who is it for? 

​

Beginners and those with some hill walking experience wanting to learn more.

​

​

A general level of fitness is required for a days walking on the moors.

​

​

Age: 

​

Minimum age is 14 years old and there is no maximum.

Planning a route,

Map scales, symbols and contours,

Basic compass skills,

Skills for poor visibility navigation,

Outcomes of the Course

​

To be able to independently plan and carry out a safe, efficient and effective countryside or moorland walk.

 

To have an awareness of access and the countryside code. 

​

To have the navigation skills to follow a simple route in poor visibility.  

 

Most importantly, to be confident and inspired to enjoy getting out. 

​

Next progression:

​

To get out and practise your new skills is the most important step. 

​

Once you're ready to learn more the next steps would be NNAS Silver award, Mountain Training Hill Skills or Mountain Skills, Intermediate Navigation Course or a Night Navigation Course. 

BASIC NAVIGATION COURSE â€‹

The Basic Navigation Course is the perfect course to take you from following friends, known routes or guidebooks to independently planning and following simple walks.

Who is it for? 

​

People with basic walking experience wanting to take their skills off the paths and tracks.

​

​

A general level of fitness is required for a days walking in open moorland.

​

​

Age: 

​

Minimum age is 14 years old and there is no maximum. 

​

Experience required: 

​

Basic hill or moorland walking experience required, including the ability to take a simple bearing.

​

Having completed our Basic Navigation course is useful and normally maximises your learning on the Intermediate course. However, it is not essential if you already have experience of self navigating simple walks.

Detailed and more complex route planning,

Magnetic bearings and their uses,

Advance compass skills,

Tactical navigation strategies, 

Advance relocation,

The basic use of GPS devices.

Outcomes of the Course

​

To be able to independently plan and carry out a safe, efficient and effective walk off the paths and tracks.

 

To have an understanding of more advanced compass skills and poor visibility navigation. 

​

To be able to apply tactical navigation methods and navigational aids.

​

To have an understanding of the environment, and access. 

​

Most importantly, to be confident to explore off paths and tracks to discover new places. 

​

​

Next progression:

​

To get out and practise your new skills is the most important step. 

​

Once you're ready to learn more the next steps would be; Night NavigationNNAS Silver, Mountain Training Hill Skills or Mountain Skills,  Bespoke Navigation course.

INTERMEDIATE NAVIGATION COURSE​
​

An Intermediate Navigation course is perfect if you have some experience of walking but want to get off the beaten track.

Intermediate Nav
Who is it for? 

​

People with basic walking experience wanting to apply their navigation skills to poor visibility/ night.

​

​

A general level of fitness is required for an evening walking in open moorland.

​

​

Age: 

​

Minimum age is 14 years old and there is no maximum. 

​

​

Experience required: 

​

Basic hill or moorland walking experience required, including the ability to take a simple bearing.

​

Having completed our Basic or Intermediate Navigation course is useful and maximises your learning on the Night Navigation Course. However, it is not essential if you already have experience of self navigating simple walks.

3-4 hours in an evening.

​

Group size: 

​

Max. 6 people

​

​

Course content:

​

Detailed and more complex route planning,

Compass skills,

Tactical navigation strategies,  

Timing and pacing,

Interpreting contours and slope aspect,

Each night navigation course is tailored to suit the clients on the course.

​

£25 per person

Outcomes of the Course

​

To be able to independently plan and carry out a safe, efficient and effective walk off the paths and tracks in poor visibility.

 

To have a good understanding of the use of timing and pacing to aid navigation. 

​

To be able to apply tactical navigation methods to aid navigation.

​

To be aware of contour interpretation and slope aspects.

​

To be confident to be off paths and tracks in poor visibility and at night.

 

To have the confidence to get to a point of safety should the conditions unexpectedly change during your walk.

NIGHT NAVIGATION COURSE​
​

A great course to increase your confidence for navigating off the paths and tracks in poor visibility and night time. This course is a good follow on from the Basic Navigation or Intermediate Navigation Courses.
